Wellness Resources is a unit within the Human Resources Division. Our desired state is to create an environment of wellness and engagement at the University of Saskatchewan through awareness and acceptance of any health challenges and to be recognized as a leader in wellness promotion and minimal lost time.

Wellness Resources works across a continuum of health management practices from health promotion, prevention, early intervention, risk identification and case management to ensure all university employees maintain or return to an optimal level of wellness.

Employee and Family Assistance Program

GuidanceResources® is an Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) that the U of S offers its employees and family members. The program offers free, confidential service which provides psychological counselling, work-life solutions, health coaching and crisis intervention services. Learn more.

Referrals to Wellness Resources

The University of Saskatchewan is committed to creating an environment that promotes and supports the health and well-being of all who work and study at our campuses. Wellness Resources is available to provide appropriate resources and supports to help faculty and staff reach their full wellness potential.

The following are common circumstances in which it is best for a supervisor, human resources, unions/associations to refer an employee or an employee to self-refer to Wellness Resources:

Extended Medical Absence (Greater than 5 days)

If an employee is currently away or planning on being away from work for more than 5 consecutive business days due to medical or if the duration of absence is unknown due to illness or non occupational injury.

Medical Accommodation (Temporary or Permanent)

If an employee requires a temporary and/or permanent accommodation due to a medical disability. Please refer to Medical Accommodation Guidelines for further information.

Patterns of/or Excessive Absence

If there is a pattern of absence or excessive absences over a period of time that may be due to medical issues.

Workplace Injury (WCB claim)

If an employee is away from work due to a workplace injury, then Workers Compensation Board (WCB) reporting requirements must be followed.

The employee’s supervisor is to notify Wellness Resources immediately of any lost time and/or if the employee requires a temporary or permanent accommodation. Note: Faculty members are not covered by the Workers Compensation legislation, as teaching professions are currently exempt.

Motor Vehicle Accident Injury (SGI claim)

If an employee is away from work due to an injury they sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Confidential Wellness Consultation

Employees and Managers/Supervisors may contact Wellness Resources to meet confidentially with Wellness staff to seek resources/information and/or obtain advice/referral.

Medical Accommodation

The University of Saskatchewan is committed to accommodating medical restrictions with modified schedule and/or duties and working with all key stakeholders to determine how we can accommodate any temporary or permanent medical restrictions.

Accommodation arrangements can often be made for modification of schedule and/or duties through a collaborative process involving the employee, supervisor, and health care provider(s). It is important that a meaningful discussion occur between the employee and the supervisor (or similar reporting relationship, such as department head) to establish the general requirements of the medical accommodation, or the length of medical accommodation anticipated. While the employee is not required to disclose confidential medical details to the supervisor, the supervisor does have the right to understand the nature of the medical condition, the medical restrictions and limitations, and the expected duration of the accommodation.

Wellness Resources can assist the employee and supervisor with temporary and/or permanent accommodation by requesting medical restrictions and limitations from the physician, interpretation and/or clarification of the medical recommendations, and advising the employee of short term or long term disability benefit applications, if applicable.

Wellness Events

Extracurricular Activities: How Much is Too Much

Participation in extracurricular activities can help children build self-esteem, discipline and commitment as well as being just plain fun. However, today children are taking on more and more activities in their schedules. Too many activities can add additional stress to the normal stress kids deal with by being full-time students. Determining how many activities is too many can make a big difference in the stress level of kids and families.

The University of Saskatchewan is hosting a free webinar for faculty, staff and their families to help children balance their extracurricular activities. Registration is required.

Workshop Objectives
At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the positive and potential negatives of extracurricular involvement
  • Describe the benefits of structured activities
  • Identify the problems associated with severely limiting free play time
  • Describe recent research findings concerning child development and extracurricular activity
  • Identify ways to finding the right balance
  • Identify simple rules to determine how many activities to schedule
  • Describe how to plan activities with your child, not for your child
  • Describe the importance of downtime and free play
  • Describe the symptoms of the over-scheduled child
  • Describe the emotional, physical and behavioral signs that indicate your child may be over-involved in structured activities

Wellness Bingo

Do you want some healthy competition? Encourage your colleagues, friends and/or family members to join you in the Wellness Bingo game. See who can get bingo first!

Goal: Encourage a healthy and holistic lifestyle by doing daily activities that focus on our eight dimensions of wellness: physical, spiritual, social, emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, and occupational. 

Here are the details:

  • Individual participation
  • Pick an area of wellness you want to focus on for the month ie) Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Social, Financial, Environmental, Occupational and Intellectual and click on the applicable Wellness Bingo card below.
  • Bingo game starts at 12:01AM on 1st of the month and ends at 11:59PM the last day of the month.
  • You work towards achieving at least one wellness square per day.
  • Set a personal goal to complete at least 17 squares over the course of the month.  If you achieve blackout (complete all the squares) over the course of the month shout BINGO!
  • Supplies you may require:
    • Bingo card
    • Journal/Book to document your responses to any challenge/reflection/journal questions.
    • Pen
    • Bingo dabber is optional (if using an electronic bingo card, don’t dabber your computer screen)
