The Parties recognize that Employees are primarily involved in research and scholarly activity. As such, there must be flexibility with respect to the hours of work to allow for the specific needs of research, scholarship, and an employee’s individual needs. The parties recognize that this arrangement is mutually beneficial for both Employees and the University.

The normal hours of work for Postdoctoral Fellows shall be 37.5 hours per week, recognizing that the needs of the Postdoctoral Fellow and the needs of the Supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the scheduling of the work.

No Postdoctoral Fellow shall exceed their normal working hours per week without their Supervisor’s prior written approval. Where Postdoctoral Fellows are approved to exceed their normal hours per week, pay or time-off-in-lieu at straight time may be approved by the Supervisor. However, should the Postdoctoral Fellow exceed 40 hours per week, overtime pay or compensatory time off shall be calculated at 1.5 times for those additional hours worked.

Time off shall be scheduled at a time mutually agreed to by both parties.

The normal hours of work for Research Associates shall be a standard amount, established upon hiring and shall be no more than 37.5 hours per week, recognizing that the needs of the Research Associate and the needs of the Supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the scheduling of work.

Notwithstanding the preceding, at the time of ratification of this agreement, Research Associates shall maintain their normal weekly hours of work as per their existing employment contract until the termination of that contract.

Employees must inform their Supervisors if they hold multiple appointments within the University.

Research Associates are exempt from overtime. Where Research Associates exceed their normal hours per week, time-off-in-lieu may be approved by the Supervisor.
